Singaporeans
Encouraged To Adopt Digital Radio As Standard Radio Fare
Through
affordable DAB receivers and trade-in programs, Digital Audio Broadcasting is
made more accessible to the Singapore radio listener.
Singapore,
October 19, 2004
- Orange Communications Pte Ltd announced today that it is joining in the Media
Development Authority (MDA)-led initiative to bring Digital Radio to Singapore
homes.
With
the use of the latest digital technology, Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) is
already offering much more than the normal radio.
Besides clear digital quality reception, audio services are supplemented
with text and graphics. In Singapore, users of DAB receivers are already
enjoying MediaCorp Radio’s SmartRadio DAB service which broadcasts 6 exclusive
digital channels and 7 FM simulcast stations.
Information such as song titles, artistes’ info and traffic reports are
simultaneously broadcasted, and listeners can view the information as scrolling
text on their receiver’s LCD screen.
Although
Singaporeans have been gradually catching on to the benefits of DAB, their
choice of receivers has been rather limited.
Orange
Communications is set to widen the choice with the launch of the Korean-made
Perstel DR601, priced at $399. This
retro-looking tabletop model allows DAB reception, as well as the conventional
FM reception. Orange Communications hopes to convert even more radio listeners
to DAB by encouraging them to trade-in their old radios for a $60 discount when
they buy the Perstel DR601 during the two-week launch in November.
Mr
Harris Tay, Managing Director of Orange Communications Pte Ltd said : “We want
to make DAB as inexpensive as possible to ordinary Singapore homes.
There are clear benefits to DAB as compared to normal radio, so we hope
that more Singaporeans will be able to adopt DAB as their standard radio fare.
So right now, our mission is to make DAB accessible to the masses by
offering a good quality DAB receiver at an affordable price. The Perstel DR601
fits the bill.”
The
Perstel DR601 will be available from 1st November at Courts and
various other authorized dealers.
