Hi-Fi System Designed For Portable Music Players

Personal music players are turned into powerful room systems when connected to this specifically-designed High Fidelity system.

Singapore, November 1, 2004 – With the launch of the “Bobo” Hi-Fi system by Lars & Ivan, distributor Orange Communications is showing owners of portable music players that their personal players can now be turned into powerful music players for an entire room.

The inspiration behind the development of the Bobo

In the early 1970’s the British Broadcasting Corporation designed a small monitor speaker for their outdoor broadcast vehicles.  Named the LS3/5a, this small little speaker surprised Hi-Fi enthusiasts with its excellent acoustics.  BBC then licensed the production of the LS3/5a to UK speaker manufacturer Rogers for mass production.  Although the Rogers product was impressive, it proved too expensive for most consumers.

Inspired by the Rogers LS3/5a, Lars & Ivan developed its own version of the speaker, but using more cost effective methods of production.  The result is the small but powerful Bobo, aimed at the cost-conscious consumer.

The Bobo components

The Bobo package is made up of two beautifully-designed speakers and a powerful though small amplifier.

The speakers’ main drive unit is a 4” Bass Driver while its high frequency is from a  PA (Professional Audio) standard ¾” Dome Tweeter.  The  sensitivity is specified as 88 dB/W at 1m and power handling  goes up to 30 watt RMS.  Inspite of its small footprint, the Bobo speakers is able to achieve a frequency response of +/- 3 dB  50 Hz – 20 KHz.

The PA-20 amplifier was designed to produce less than 0.01% (-80 dB) distortion across the entire 20Hz – 20KHz spectrum at levels 1 or 2 dB below its clipping point.  Its rated output power is 10 watt RMS x 2 channels.  Listeners are frequently surprised by the powerful output being delivered by such a small-sized amplifier. To achieve even more powerful bass, the PA-20 allows users to connect an external sub-woofer via its output jack.

How to use the Bobo

Put together, the speakers and amplifier created a perfect High Fidelity system for connecting to portable music players.  Users of portable MP3 and CD players are always pleasantly surprised when they connect up their players to the Bobo.  Vocals and individual instruments can be heard with good detail and clarity. To enjoy the Bobo at its best,  it is recommended to use it within an area of approximately 20 square meters – the size of most bedrooms, studyrooms and small dining rooms.

And it looks great too!

The Danish designers at Lars & Ivan know that it is not enough to just develop a great product, they know users want their product to look good in their homes too.  With this in mind, a lot of effort was put into creating a design that would stand out, as well as blend into any room.  With the clever use of clear acrylic and muted silver tones, the designers have been successful in achieving a zen look to the Bobo that would enhance any room.

Where to buy

You can find the Bobo at good Hi-Fi outlets, and at Courts & Tangs.  It retails for S$399.
